Rep. Tony Cárdenas has a long history in political office. He was first elected to the California State Assembly in 1996. He went on to serve three terms in the assembly and was later elected to the Los Angeles City Council, in 2003. He has served in Congress since 2013. Meanwhile, California Congressman Pete Aguilar, the highest-ranking Latino member of Congress, called for indicted U.S. Sen. Robert Menéndez (D-New Jersey) to resign.

Aguilar represents San Bernardino and other portions of Southern California’s Inland Empire, is chair of the House Democratic Caucus.

Pete Aguilar moves up from the vice chair position to become the third-most powerful Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives. “It’s not lost on me what my election means for my community, for the Latino community,” Aguilar said last week at a gathering of House Democrats. “Being a kid from San Bernardino, having an opportunity to guide this caucus is a great responsibility and I don’t take it lightly.”

Politics is akin to a sport but what transpired on Jan. 6, 2021 was not a game. It was an assault on our democracy and the ring leaders, including President Donald Trump, should be held accountable. At the third hearing held Thursday morning a California Latino Congressman figured prominently. U.S. Rep. Pete Aguilar, D-Calif., represents the 31st district that includes the Inland Empire and parts of San Bernardino, Rancho Cucamonga and Upland. He is the only Latino on the committee.
