Mayor Karen Bass declared the emergency curfew for portions of Downtown Los Angeles would be lifted starting Tuesday, less than a week after it was imposed. The curfew, which began last Wednesday for a limited area of about one square mile in Downtown L.A., has now been terminated, with Bass warning it could be reinstated if necessary.
“The curfew, coupled with ongoing crime prevention efforts, has been largely successful in protecting stores, restaurants, businesses and residential communities from bad actors who do not care about the immigrant community,” Bass said in a statement. “I am lifting the curfew effective today, and as we continue quickly adapting to chaos coming from Washington, and I will be prepared to reissue a curfew if needed.”
She said her priority will continue to be ensuring safety, stability and support in the downtown area and neighborhoods around it.
Despite this, Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell said there will still be a heavy presence of LAPD officers in the area. “The LAPD will maintain a strong presence in the area and continue to monitor conditions closely to protect lives, uphold the right to lawful assembly, and safeguard property,” he said in a statement.
Ysabel Jurado, the council member overseeing the DTLA area, also said lifting the curfew could help small businesses, many of which have lost thousands of dollars by having to close at an earlier time.
“The decision to lift the curfew reflects what many in our community—residents, small business owners, and peaceful demonstrators in support of immigrant communities—have been asking for. It’s an important step in making sure Angelenos feel safe, seen, and heard,” Jurado said.
