Jonathan Hale posted a video on December 7 that shows him being arrested and cited for painting a crosswalk.
“We’ve been painting crosswalks around L.A. to protest for safe streets,” Hale said in the video. He said he is a member of People’s Vision Zero and they have been painting sidewalks to increase safety, choosing crosswalks where people have been hit or killed.
He said he has informed Mayor Karen Bass' office when they intend to paint crosswalks, posting fliers around the neighborhood and talking to neighbors.
After Nadir Navarrete, 6 was killed on a Koreatown street on July 31, Hale said he met with the Mayor’s office in September, hoping to work together, but was ignored.
The LAPD officer is heard on the video saying Hale was arrested for “vandalizing property without a permit” and then warned people recording that if they didn’t back, he would take them to jail.
“We’ve been painting code-compliant, but un-permitted crosswalks to protest for safer streets and a better government,” Hale wrote in the video caption. “I’ve made it clear to them that we won’t stop unless they publicly condemn us, or take tangible steps to make our streets safer.”
