Across the nation, community members, public officials and civic leaders have decried the killing of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent.
Protests have erupted in several cities, including Los Angeles, Seattle, New York and Minneapolis.
“We are witnessing unconscionable levels of escalating violence by ICE agents against anyone who objects to their random, unlawful kidnappings of community members," said Angelica Salas, executive director for the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA). "On Wednesday, in Minneapolis, a local community member was shot dead at point blank. And just today, another shooting incident in Portland involving CBP agents wounded two people. It must stop."
Organizers and public officials demand an independent investigation into the fatal shooting.
"We demand justice for Renee Nicole Good," Michelle from the Party for Socialism and Liberation said at a protest on Wednesday. "We demand an end to ICE's reign of terror across this country from Minneapolis to Pasadena, Los Angeles, Chicago, everywhere." She also called it "state-sanctioned murder."
"No community in America should be subjected to violence or terror because of federal enforcement actions," Salas continued in a statement. "As we grieve and denounce the Trump Administration’s brutality, we urge community members and allies to channel their reaction into peaceful protest and civic action. Our collective power lies in protecting one another and demanding justice.”
The shooting "perpetrated by an ICE agent, is a sobering reminder of the indiscriminate consequences of Donald Trump’s heartless attacks on our immigrant communities. My thoughts are with the victim’s family, and my message to ICE is simple: Keep your violence and terror out of our communities in California, Minnesota and across our nation,” Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas said.
“The reports of a shooting involving ICE in Minneapolis are alarming. When incidents like this occur, they underscore the urgent need for transparency and oversight, because when enforcement turns violent, no one is safe,” said Assemblymember Juan Carrillo, Vice-Chair of the California Legislative Latino Caucus.
“ICE killed a woman in cold blood today on the streets of Minneapolis. If we allow this to go unanswered, no one is safe,” said Assemblymember Liz Ortega, Vice-Chair of the California Legislative Latino Caucus.
"Today’s violent incident in Minneapolis is yet another harrowing example of the out-of-control tactics of this Administration," said a statement from the Service Employees International Union-United Service Workers West (SEIU-USWW) condemning the killing of a community member by ICE agents. "Like we’ve seen in Los Angeles and other cities across the country, the rogue, violent and repressive tactics are part of a broader strategy to silence dissent, criminalize resistance and further erode the foundations of our democracy."
The LA Rapid Response Network (LARRN) issued a statement expressing concerns after an ICE agent shot and killed a 37-year-old woman in Minneapolis on Wednesday.
Though federal officials claim self-defense, the city’s mayor and state officials disagree.
Videos on social media show an officer approaching an SUV in the middle of the road, demanding the driver open the door. The SUV pulls forward and another agent standing towards the front pulls his weapon. He fires as the driver moves forward.
“We are extremely disturbed by reports that a woman, a community observer, was shot to death today by ICE agents,” the statement reads. “Based on previous experience here in Los Angeles and throughout the country, we believe this is one more example of extreme use of lethal force against a person witnessing and documenting immigration kidnappings in their community.
Just one week ago, over the New Year’s Eve celebrations, an off-duty ICE agent shot and killed Keith Porter in Northridge, bringing the total number of incidents resulting in death or injury to an Angeleno to nearly a dozen.”
The LARRN said the incident, along with previous ones, should be investigated, and the federal agents responsible should be held accountable.
“The terrorizing and violent tactics of this rogue agency must end,” the statement finalized.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said federal agents are “causing chaos and distrust” in the city.
A DHS official told NBC News that ICE officers should not position themselves in front of a vehicle or shoot a moving car.
