About

Dr. Alberto “Beto” Gutierrez was born in Jerez, Zacatecas, Mexico and raised in Los Angeles, California. A product of a failing public school system that tracked him into the trades and discouraged him from attending college, Beto pursued a college degree as an act of rebellion. Beto went on to earn an A.A. at Los Angeles Valley College, Bachelor of Arts at California State University Los Angeles, a Master of Arts and Ph.D. at UCLA and currently teaches at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, CA. Beto taught Social Studies for the Division of Juvenile Justice and worked as a Substitute teacher for Los Angeles County Office of Education. Beto has published several articles on the school-to-prison pipeline and is currently working on a travel memoir.
