College of the Canyons - do not reuse

SANTA CLARITA (CNS) - The Santa Clarita Community College District board of trustees has a new member Thursday, filling a seat vacated by Joan MacGregor who resigned in August.

Carlos Guerrero, a professor at Los Angeles Valley College, was appointed at Wednesday's meeting to the College of the Canyons board of trustees.

He was the preferred candidate of the College of the Canyons Faculty Association and one of three candidates being considered for the vacant seat.

The other two candidates were Tony Maldonado and Jason Abrahamson. Abrahamson told the board prior to the meeting he was dropping out of consideration, board President Edel Alonso told The Signal newspaper in Santa Clarita.

Guerrero will represent Trustee Area 5, which covers parts of Canyon Country and Newhall.

Guerrero is a graduate of Golden Valley High School in Newhall and has lived in Santa Clarita since 1994. Maldonado is the executive creative director for Insignia Entertainment.

The board of trustees has one more seat to fill. Chuck Lyon resigned from the board in June. His seat is up for election in November.

Sebastian Cazares is not running for reelection to the board of trustees. Alonso and Jerry Danielson are running for reelection.

The board of trustees placed then-Chancellor and CEO Dianne Van Hook on administrative leave with a 3-0 vote in July. Van Hook later retired as Chancellor and CEO. David Andrus was appointed interim chancellor while the board conducts a search for a permanent chancellor.

Only three trustees were present for the vote to place Van Hook on leave. Lyon was not at the meeting. Cazares was not present at the meeting because of a family emergency.
