As president-elect Donald Trump threatens to implement massive deportations, the L.A. Care Health Plan Board of Governors unanimously passed a resolution to support members and their communities.
The resolution ensures protection for those at risk of losing their coverage and addresses concerns about member’s immigration status being shared with the federal government.
In 2023, the Center for Migration Studies said the United States is home to approximately 11.7 million undocumented individuals. In 2024, the Pew Research Center estimated that California is home to about 1.8 million undocumented individuals. InCalifornia, many undocumented immigrants are now eligible for health care coverage through Medi-Cal and Covered California.
The Board resolution states that providing access to quality health care for low-income vulnerable Angelenos is the health plan’s mission. L.A. Care will advocate strongly for continued access to health coverage and benefits for all eligible children and adults, regardless of immigration status.
The resolution also emphasizes the importance of keeping individuals' information safe to prevent disclosures that could jeopardize their access to health care or affect their immigration status, including the risk of deportation.
L.A. Care said they are committed to providing health care access to everyone and ensuring a fair and just opportunity to be as healthy as possible.
