In a sold-out show, Julieta Venegas, one of Latin pop music's greatest exponents and protagonists, took over one of L.A.’s most historically recognized outdoor entertainment venues, the Greek Theater.
The theater, with a capacity of 5,900 people, was graced with some of Venega’s most popular and greatest hits, including “Me Voy,” “Andar Conmigo,” “El Presente" and “Eres para mi,” among others.
One of the night's most memorable moments was when Venegas, who came out on stage at 9:15 p.m. and played for almost two hours, dedicated one of her songs, “Ese Camino,” to the immigrant community of Los Angeles and the United States. “This is for everyone that left their homes and has been able to build a new one,” she said in Spanish.
Venegas, whose full name is Julieta Venegas Percevault, was born in Long Beach, California. However, most of her early life was spent in Tijuana, Mexico, the place where her family still resides.
The singer and songwriter has dual Mexican and American citizenship and has been inspired by both countries in her work and life, something that many Chicanos and Latinos identify with.
Throughout the night, Venegas also showed off her instrumental skills. Venegas played the keyboards, guitar, and of course, the accordion, which has become the artist’s signature instrument. Apart from that, Venegas also plays the piano, wurlitzer, vibraphone, caja and cello.
Venegas has publicly said that her love for music began when she was just a kid and her parents signed her up for piano lessons. Venegas debuted with her album, "Aquí," in 1997, followed by subsequent production, "Bueninvento" (2000).
The alternative pop-rock indie musician has captivated audiences with her lyrics and songs that talk about love and life and social topics such as immigration and mental health.
Throughout her career, she has topped the Latin Billboard charts various times with songs like "Algo está cambiando.” She is an eight-time Latin Grammy Award winner, a seven-time MTV Award winner and a two-time Billboard Music Award winner, with over 100 other awards.
Vengas said that performing in front of a sold-out audience in the Greek Theater was a “dream come true,” something that, as she said, she hopes to tell her grandchildren about.
“Me lo llenaron, muchas gracias,” she said. Venega’s parents and family were also present at the show. She also mentioned her unidentified “boyfriend” was present.
She ended the night with "Limón y Sal," a song from her album with the same. Today, "Limón y Sal” remains her best-selling album to date and has attained platinum status in several countries, including the U.S.
Her performance at the Greek Theater was part of Venegas’ U.S. tour, which only had a total of seven dates. Three of the seven places on her tour are in California. She performed at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga, CA and will be ending her tour in The Backyard in Sacramento.
“See you soon, L.A.,” Venegas said as she walked off stage. The 53-year-old artist was referencing her upcoming performance at the Besame Mucho Music Festival happening in the Dodger Stadium on December 21, 2024.
