South Gate Mayor Gil Hurtado said at Tuesday's city council meeting that he has received complaints about water filter vendors who are aggressively trying to sell their product to residents.

“The water is safe to drink,” Mayor Hurtado said. ”We always want to protect our city.”

He also warned that the salespeople do not have a soliciting permit to sell water filters.

City Manager Rob Houston reiterated that the water goes through a testing process and that it is safe to drink for all residents.

If people suspect solicitors do not have a permit or pretend to be city officials, the city hall number to call is (323) 563-9500.

This story has been updated to clarify Rob Houston is City Manager, not City Attorney.
