‘ICE out,’ Bad Bunny makes history at the Grammys

Bad Bunny’s “Debí Tirar Más Fotos” became the first Spanish-language album to win in the Album Of The Year category at the Grammys.

Dressed in a Schiaparelli tux laced with leather strings in the back, Bad Bunny covered his eyes as he heard his name being called as the winner of the Album of the Year. He gave most of his acceptance speech for the award in Spanish, naturally. 

Bad Bunny also won the Best Música Urbana Album category for the third time. As he accepted this award, he said, “Before I say thanks to God, I’m gonna say, ICE out.” 

“We’re not savage, we’re not animals, we’re not aliens, we are humans and we are Americans,” he continued. “The only thing that is more powerful than hate is love.”

Bad Bunny also won for Best Global Music Performance for “EoO.”

As he prepares for his Super Bowl performance, which many have criticized as not being “American enough” since all his songs are in Spanish and he is from Puerto Rico, the Grammys host, Trevor Noah, tried to coax Bad Bunny to perform. Noah even started singing “DTMF” himself and brought out an orchestra as Bad Bunny tried not to sing his own song.

In other categories, Natalia Lafourcade won Latin Pop Album for her album “Cancionera” and Gloria Estefan won Tropical Latin album for “Raíces.” Carín León won Música Mexicana album for “Palabra De To’s (Seca).”

Ca7riel and Paco Amoroso won their first Grammy in the Latin Rock or Alternative Album category for “Papota.” During their acceptance speech, which was not part of the official televised show, they gave a shout-out to Argentina and Latin America. “We love you!” Paco Amoroso said.  

Overall, most of the Grammys broadcast a night of music, fun and entertainment, but an undercurrent of social justice and commentary permeated the night, as several artists commented on the current state of the nation. 

“No one is illegal on stolen land,” Billie Eilish said as she accepted her award for Song of the Year for her song “Wildflower.” Eilish has spoken out before and has even called out billionaires for not doing more for communities. 

Justin Bieber and his wife Hailey Bieber sported “ICE OUT” pins on the red carpet. 

“I’m up here as a granddaughter of an immigrant,” Olivia Dean said as she accepted her Best New Artist Award. “I’m a product of bravery and I think that should be celebrated.”

As Jelly Roll mentioned his belief in Jesus Christ in his acceptance speech for Country duo/group performance for his song “Amen,” he also made it a point to add that Jesus does not belong to a political party, although many consider him a supporter of the Republican Party.
