Lalo on CALÓ: And the Golden Baton goes to...

In 1979, LAPD Chief Daryl Gates issued Special Order 40, restricting police cooperation with federal immigration authorities. Yes, THAT Daryl Gates—the notoriously racist, heavy-handed police chief whose idea of community relations often involved a baton, a chokehold, or a squad of cops kicking down somebody’s door. Gates was hardly a bleeding-heart liberal or a champion of immigrant rights. He simply understood that terrorizing immigrants with the threat of deportation was the wrong way to get them to report crimes or cooperate with police. Imagine that. Even one of the most brutal police chiefs in LAPD history understood something that today’s immigration hard-liners apparently can't wrap their heads around.
