One of the top Latino groups, Los Bukis, known for hits such as “Tu Cárcel,” “Yo te Necesito,” and “Tus Mentiras,” among others, received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The group, which rose to fame during the 70s and reunited in their 2020-2021 tour, dedicated their star to the immigrant community living in the United States. “We are with you,” the group’s lead, Juan Antonio Solis, said. “Our hearts go out to all the people who are suddenly suffering from these adversities.''
The Grammy-nominated Mexican group unveiled their star among fans, actors like Demian Bichir and other entertainment superstars such as comedian Gabriel “Fluffy'' Iglesias.
To receive a star in the popular and frequently visited Walk of Fame, artists like Los Bukis must be nominated and approved by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.
The chamber then looks at the artist's professional achievement, longevity in the category of five years or more, contributions to the community and the guarantee that the celebrity will attend the dedication ceremony if selected, according to the chamber’s website.
After the Walk of Fame Selection Committee has made its selections, the Hollywood Chamber’s Board of Directors also votes to approve the star, and then, for final approval, the names are submitted to the City of Los Angeles’ Board of Public Works Department.
The group received the 2,817th star, located at 7060 Hollywood Blvd.
They also gave a message of hope to their fans, the majority of whom are Latinos.
“We firmly believe that this will change soon, sooner than we imagine,'' Solis said.
Although he did not specify the exact adversities he was referring to, fans speculate he was talking about the ongoing and prevalent ICE raids that have erupted throughout the country, many of which have taken place in L.A., in the same region where they were recognized this Wednesday.
Later on Instagram, the group shared the good news with their fans.
“A day to remember that dreams come true,” they wrote in a post. “What began a few decades ago as a dream in Michoacán today reaches a new milestone with a star on the world's most important walk of fame… Thank you to everyone who has accompanied us along the way, to our families [and] to God, but we especially dedicate this star to all the migrants who have brought our music to this great country.”
