Back again this year to showcase homemade recipes from across metro Phoenix, Food City’s annual tamal contest will kick off this week just a few weeks out from Christmas, a celebration where tamales are often the main dish in Latino households.
Hosted by the Arizona Pork Council and Food City, the 23rd Annual Tamale Making Contest is free to enter. All interested participants must call the organizers’ radio station partner, La Tricolor 103.5FM, at (602) 776-1400 to register.
Preliminary competitions begin on Thursday, Dec. 4, where registered participants will be asked to arrive at the specified Food City location with six prepared tamales for judging. Winners will have the opportunity to qualify for the final competition and win prizes.
The grand finale will be held on Saturday, Dec. 13, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Food City located at 845 W. Southern Ave., in south Phoenix.
Last year, a mother and son won first and third place, respectively, in the tamal-making contest. This was the first time family members competed against one another.
Additionally, Arizonans are invited to participate in the Tamalada Story & Photo Contest. Participants can enter by submitting stories and photos of their most cherished memories of tamaladas on the Food City website.
The winners will be announced on the same day the competition finale takes place. Last year, winners from Tolleson, Phoenix and Gilbert were crowned.
