Midterm elections are just around the corner and all 52 U.S Congressional Districts in California will be on the ballot.

Before the November election, however, California registered voters will get a chance to choose party candidates during the June 2 Primary Election. Registered voters should have received or will soon receive a mail-in ballot, which they can mail in by June 2 or drop off in person by 8 p.m. on election day.

These are some of the district races we're keeping tabs on in Southern California. 

 

Congressional District 37

U.S. Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove, a Democrat, represents parts of Los Angeles’ central area, including the cities of L.A., Inglewood, Culver City and unincorporated areas like Ladera Heights and View Park-Windsor Hills. This is Kamlager-Dove’s third year representing the district, taking office in January 2023. 

During her time as congresswoman, she was assigned to the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Western Hemisphere and the Committee on Natural Resources. She also served as the president of the Los Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees, in the California Assembly from 2018 to 2021 and the California Senate from 2021 to 2022. 

A total of eight candidates are running against Kamlager-Dove’s seat in the House:

 

Congressional District 34

U.S. Rep. Jimmy Gomez, a Democrat, represents parts of Downtown L.A. and East L.A. Those areas include  Boyle Heights, Chinatown, City Terrace, Cypress Park, Downtown Los Angeles, Eagle Rock, El Sereno, Glassell Park, Highland Park, Koreatown, Little Tokyo, Lincoln Heights, Pico Union and Westlake. Gomez assumed office as U.S. Congressman for the California’s 34th District on July 11, 2017

Gomez has been assigned to numerous committees during his tenure, including the Committee on Ways and Means, Committee on Intelligence and Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. He also held office as California State Assemblymember for the 51st District from 2012 - 2017. 

Currently, five candidates are running for California's 34th District: 

 

Congressional District 43

U.S. Rep Maxine Waters, a Democrat, assumed office as California’s 43rd District Congresswoman on January 3, 2013. She represents Westchester and Playa Del Rey, the unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County such as Lennox, West Athens, West Carson, Harbor Gateway, El Camino Village, and Watts. Walters’ District also includes the cities of Gardena, Hawthorne, Inglewood, Lawndale, Lomita and Torrance.

Throughout Walter’s tenure, she has been assigned to Committee on Financial Services, Judiciary Committee and a number of subcommittees including Subcommittee on Immigration Policy and Enforcement and Subcommittee on Insurance, Housing and Community Opportunity among others. 

In the past, Walters also served as U.S. Rep. for California’s 35th (1993 - 2013) and 29th (1991 - 1993) Districts and for California’s State Assembly District 48 (1977 - 1991). 

Three candidates will be on the ballot for California’s 43rd District: 

 

Congressional District 44

U.S Rep.Nanette Barragán, a Democrat, represents Los Angeles’ South Bay and Harbor area, which is comprised of Carson, Compton, East Compton, East Rancho Dominguez, Lakewood, Lynwood, North Long Beach, San Pedro, South Gate, Watts, Walnut Park, West Rancho Dominguez, Willowbrook and Wilmington.

Barragán assumed office as U.S. Congresswoman for California’s 44th District on January 3, 2017. 

Barragán has been assigned to numerous committees including Committee on Energy and Commerce, Committee on Homeland Security and Committee on Natural Resources

Candidate Genevieve Angel, a Republican and a resident of Lakewood for nearly three decades, will be the sole candidate running against Barragán for Calfifornia’s 44th District seat. 

 

Congressional District 42

U.S. Rep. Robert Garcia, a Democrat, represents Long Beach and Southeast L.A.., which includes the cities Bellflower, Downey and Huntington Park. He assumed office on January 3, 2023. 

During his tenure as congressman, Garcia has been assigned to the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, Committee on Homeland Security and Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure

Garcia is a former mayor and vice mayor of Long Beach, California, serving from 2014 to 2022. He also served on the Long Beach City Council from 2009 to 2014. 

No candidates are currently running for Garcia's seat.
