With a ribbon-cutting celebration last week, the City of Pico Rivera officially opened Alebrije Dog Park, creating a new destination where residents and their furry friends can play, socialize and enjoy the outdoors together.

Marking a milestone in the city, the celebration took place at the southwest corner of Rosemead Boulevard and Gallatin Road and included city leaders, partners and community members.

The dog park was designed with community input and features walking and jogging paths, hydration stations, seating areas, play spaces, obstacle elements and more. The park’s Alebrije theme also highlights local wildlife and celebrates Pico Rivera’s heritage.

The City also intends to integrate local artwork and explore programs with agencies such as the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control to support adoptions, vaccinations and other services.

A community member wrote on the city’s social media, “I grew up in that neighborhood, and I’m glad to see the park being used,” while another one wrote, “This is wonderful for the animals.”

The Alebrije Dog Park project was funded by a $1,000,000 grant from the California Natural Resources Agency, along with $1,500,000 from the city using American Rescue Plan Act funds that were transferred to the city’s Capital Improvement Projects Fund. The city first requested the funding through the office of Assemblymember Lisa Calderon (D-Whittier), highlighting the partnership that helped secure the investment.

“This celebration represents more than the opening of Alebrije Dog Park, it reflects the power of partnership and investment in our community,” said Pico Rivera Mayor Gustavo Camacho. “Thanks to the leadership of Assemblymember Lisa Calderon in securing $1 million in state funding, along with additional City support, we brought Pico Rivera’s first dog park to life. We

fully expect our residents will flock to the new park with their four-legged family members. We also deeply appreciate the ongoing work of our City team and community partners who helped conceptualize a park that celebrates culture, wellness and the connection betweenpeople and their pets.”
