Amairani Hernandez is a finalist for the Ethnic Media Awards in the Education category.

CALÓ News reporter Amairani Hernandez is a finalist for the Ethnic Media Expo & Awards for her story on a high school student leading walkouts in Bakersfield.

High school student leading Bakersfield walkouts: ‘We have to stand up for ourselves’” has been selected as a finalist in the education category.

The 2025 Ethnic Media Expo & Awards recognize outstanding journalism published by or aired over California-based English language or in-language ethnic media outlets.

The Education award recognizes outstanding in-depth analysis, feature stories or investigative reporting on education — from preschool through K-12, college, postgraduate, and vocational training—as it relates to ethnic and immigrant communities. It honors reporting that sheds light on the unique challenges, opportunities, and innovations shaping educational experiences across generations.

Ethnic media outlets are those print, digital, broadcast or multimedia platforms that target a specific audience defined by race, ethnic origin, gender identity and that publish regularly. Pan-ethnic media outlets target multiple ethnic audiences such as pan-AAPI, pan-African diaspora, pan-immigrant, pan-people of color, and pan-LGBTQ+.

The 2025 CA Ethnic Media Awards categories highlight issues that align with ethnic media’s central mission to tell the stories and amplify the voices and perspectives of their communities.

The categories include the Art/Culture, Entertainment & Sports award, Business & Economy, the Environment, Health, Immigration, International Affairs and Politics.

They will have three Winners per category in Print/Digital, Broadcast (TV & Radio) and Multimedia.

The awards will be presented on November 7th at the PG&E Conference Center in Oakland.
