Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass signed an executive order on Friday, July 12, to support undocumented immigrants in response to recent immigration raids taking place across Southern California.
The executive order is also aimed at strengthening city protections for immigrant communities in the wake of the ongoing raids in which Bass described as “unlawful and chaotic.”
Bass conducted the press conference at El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument, which is known as the birthplace of Los Angeles.
The mayor believes that this new executive order is necessary in order for community members to understand how to protect themselves from the federal government.
"What we have seen here over the last, now six weeks of raids, that pop up and we never know exactly when and where they're going to happen,” she said.
Bass also said that the new directive demands federal agencies to hand over information about taking place raids in the city, including when and where they happened, who was detained and how much it cost taxpayers.
