Argentine composer and singer Leo Dan has died at 82 in Miami, Florida.
The official Instagram account of Leo Dan posted the news on January 1. “This morning our beloved Leo Dan left his body in peace and with the love of his family. He returned to the pure light of his Heavenly Father, to guide us and take care of us from the infinite. Today, January 1, 2025, we invite all those who were part of his story and who were touched by his legacy, to celebrate his love, his music and his life. With much peace in our hearts, we remember and feel his deep love… forever.”
Born Leopoldo Dante Tévez in Argentina, he composed and sang many classic songs like "Qué tiene la niña," "Por un caminito,""Te he prometido" and “Cómo te extraño, mi amor” which was covered by the Mexican band Café Tacvba.
Leo Dan’s connection with Mexico also stemmed from collaborating with mariachi music and became a beloved popular singer in the 1960s and 1970s in Mexico as well as Argentina.
On a personal note, his melodic songs are a big part of my childhood soundtrack, spending time at my grandmother’s house, and listening to the radio.
“Te he prometido” was also covered by the Mexican Ska band from Monterrey, Inspector, demonstrating how Leo Dan’s catchy tunes translate to other sounds. The cumbia, Afro-Cuban Jazz and Americana band LA LOM also covered the iconic song and posted it on Instagram. “RIP Leo Dan, tu música vive para siempre,” their post says: Leo Dan, your music will live on forever. Indeed.
