The founder of the Mariachi Reyna de Los Ángeles, José Hernández, has responded to the allegations that his mariachi group, as well as himself and his family, support President Donald Trump and his MAGA agenda.
He said he was disappointed to see the criticism surrounding Mariachi Reyna after their performances at the Coachella music festival alongside Karol G.
“Personal attacks, threats and harassment against the members of Mariachi Reyna not only affect them, but also the girls who dream and aspire to leave their mark in mariachi music,” Hernández said in a video posted on Instagram in Spanish. “Politicizing Mariachi Reyna distorts our mission and our members.”
He stated that he does not publicly support any political candidate.
“To be clear, I do not publicly support political candidates, nor does Mariachi Reyna de Los Ángeles or the Mariachi Sol de Mexico have endorsed any candidate or political party,” Hernández said.
He went on to say that he has never funded any political campaign, and neither have his mariachi groups nor his nonprofit group, Mariachi Heritage Society.
He also clarified that all members of the all-female mariachi group have their own personal beliefs. “My own beliefs, just like the beliefs of the members, are personal,” he said.
Hernández said his mariachi groups have played for different political leaders, including presidents from across the political spectrum, except for the current administration.
“I don’t support the way that the Trump administration has treated the immigrant community. It does not reflect the values I hold or the way that immigration should be addressed in this country,” he said.
Regarding his wife, Teresa Hernandez, president of the conservative Lincoln Club, he said she is a private citizen, has her own set of beliefs and is not a founder of the mariachi groups and when it comes to politics, they don’t see eye to eye.
He said he is registered as an independent.
Trumpet player and Mariachi Reyna member Linda Uhila also posted a video on social media stating that she is not a Trump supporter. She also included the CALÓ News cartoon from Lalo Alcaraz in her video, calling out the criticism against her and the other members of the mariachi group.
“I am not MAGA. I do not support those views, my family does not either,” Uhila said. “I stand with my Mexican and Latino community. I’ve been a mariachi musician for over 20 years.”
She continued, “Mariachi isn’t about one person or one belief. It’s about tradition, discipline, history and the women who have dedicated their lives to keeping it alive.”
