Mariachi Reyna de Los Ángeles, who performed “El Son de la Negra” during Karol G’s performance at Coachella, has been called out online for being Trump supporters.
NBC reporter Amber Frias interviewed Crystal Hernandez, a member of the group founded by her father, José Hernández.
When Frias asked Hernandez if, while people feel proud to see the mariachi on stage, there have been reports that people affiliated with the group have political affiliations that may not reflect those of their fans, she was interrupted by the group’s publicist, who directed her to the statement.
After Frias asked Hernandez again, she said, “Being up there on that stage, people know where our hearts are at.”
Social media videos have shared screenshots of her Instagram following President Donald Trump, but she has now made her account private.
The official statement of the group indicates that “the founder and director of Mariachi Reyna has not made public statements endorsing any political candidate.”
Crystal’s father, José Hernández, founded the Mariachi Sol de Mexico in 1981 and the Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles in 1994. Mariachi Reyna was inducted into the California Hall of Fame last month.
His wife, Teresa Hernandez, is the president of the Conservative Lincoln Club. She led the organization’s efforts to recall Governor Gavin Newsom. In a video circulated online, she is heard saying the organization invites conservative leaders like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Tucker Carlson.
The all-women mariachi group also performed while Karol G sang her ballad “Ese Hombre Es Malo” and when she sang “Mamiii” alongside Becky G, who expressed support for immigrants before walking off the stage.
José Hernández is also the owner of the Mexican restaurant Casa del Sol in Tustin and previously owned Cielito Lindo Restaurant in South El Monte.
