Gustavo Cerati is honored by Gibson with a limited edition custom guitar

Gibson Custom has partnered with the estate of Gustavo Cerati to unveil the Gibson Custom Gustavo Cerati ES‑335, a tribute to one of the most influential artists in Latin American music.

The limited edition custom guitar is also in celebration of the opening of the Gibson Garage Miami, and only 60 guitars will be available.  

Inspired by Cerati’s original 1965 ES-335, this guitar captures the soul, sound and visual character of the instrument that accompanied him through pivotal moments of his career. Built by Gibson Custom and aged by the Murphy Lab, the ES-335 features a 60s Cherry finish, factory double pickguards, Grover kidney button tuning keys and a B7 Bigsby, faithfully reflecting the guitar that became inseparable from Cerati’s artistic identity. The result is a museum-quality, yet fully playable collectible designed to endure both musically and historically.

Cerati purchased the original Gibson ES‑335 TD in the mid‑1990s at Rudy’s Music in New York, where it had already been customized with a second pickguard, leather back pad, and Bigsby vibrato. Those distinctive details became part of the guitar’s visual identity and are faithfully reflected in Gibson Custom’s limited recreation. Cerati’s original 1965 ES-335 played a defining role across decades of legendary performances. It was featured prominently during Soda Stereo’s historic 1996 MTV Unplugged performance, the band’s 1997 El Último Concierto farewell tour, and the monumental Me Verás Volver reunion tour in 2007. The guitar later became Cerati’s primary instrument during the Bocanada era and appeared on major international broadcasts, including his 2007 Live Earth performance alongside Shakira, cementing its place in global music history. 

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1959, Gustavo Adrián Cerati Clark rose to international prominence as the frontman, guitarist and creative force behind Soda Stereo, the pioneering band that helped define the rock en español movement throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Soda Stereo became a cultural pillar across Latin America, influencing countless artists and reshaping the sound of rock en español. To put it simply, there is no rock en español without Soda Stereo and Cerati’s work.

Following the band’s initial breakup in 1997, Cerati embarked on a solo career that expanded his artistic boundaries. Albums such as “Bocanada” and “Ahí Vamos” showcased his evolution into electronic, experimental and alternative rock landscapes, while maintaining the poetic lyricism and melodic depth that defined his voice. Cerati’s work continues to inspire generations, securing his legacy as one of the most important and influential musicians in the history of Latin American rock.
