We have a busy weekend here at CALÓ News!

We’re starting Friday, October 2, at the SELA Decides voter info event in collaboration with CalMatters and SELA Collaborative from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Bateman Hall in Lynwood, 11331 Ernestine Ave, Lynwood, CA 90262. We will have free tacos and aguas frescas and lots of information to learn about what’s on the ballot for the midterm elections on November 3. RSVP here.

On Friday as well, some of us are also heading to El Mitote to celebrate our Latinidad for an evening of purposeful networking and celebration organized by the Latino Media Collaborative, our parent organization. The event starts at 6 p.m. and will end at 9 p.m. Grow your professional network in a lively, relaxed setting filled with live music, craft drinks and great conversation. Cargo Snack Shack at L.A. On Saturday, October 3, CALÓ News staff reporter Brenda Verano will moderate a forum featuring Los Angeles mayoral candidates Nithya Raman and incumbent Mayor Karen Bass at A Place Called Home, 2830 S Central Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90011. City Council District 9 candidates Estuardo Mazariegos and Jose Ugarte will also be featured.

The forum starts at 10 am and will end at 1. RSVP here. 

On Saturday night, the Contra-ICE album release party will be at La Cita Bar with special performances by David J (of Love & Rockets, Bauhaus), Fishbone, Los Abandoned, Daniel French (of Las  Cafeteras), Uli Bella (Ozomatli), Gretchen Parlato, Of Mexican Descent featuring 2Mex, Nancy  Sanchez, Las Chorizeras, Filer Coleman (ex. Cop Shoot Cop), Jodi Lin, HopesAndDrums, DJ  Dali, comedians Frankie Quiñones and Richard Montoya (of Culture Clash).CALÓ News staff cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz will also attend. Proceeds of ticket sales benefit Build Art Make Change, the nonprofit behind “Contra-ICE Vol. 1: ICE  OUT.” Proceeds of the album will raise vital funds for Unión del Barrio and National Day Laborer  Organizing Network (NDLON) to support their ongoing work defending human, civil, and labor rights for impacted communities. It all takes place at La Cita Bar at 8 p.m., 336 S. Hill St., Los Angeles, 90013.
