The 8U youth Mexican team won the Cal Ripken World Series in the U.S. on Sunday.
“This triumph reflects discipline, commitment and unity,” Cal Ripken Mexico Oficial wrote on Facebook.
The 10-2 win over the United States took place in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.
According to Mexico News Daily, pitcher Milán “Búfalo” Zazueta struck out 10 batters in four innings.
The 8U division is for seven and eight-year-olds.
Eight of the 12 kids on Mexico’s roster hail from the state of Sinaloa, seven of them from the state capital of Culiacán and one from Mazatlán. The other four ballplayers are from the state of Baja California, two each from Ensenada and Tijuana.
The Cal Ripken Baseball World Series only features teams from the U.S. and Mexico. The tournament is part of the Babe Ruth League, which was founded in 1951. In 1982, it instituted its Bambino Division for players ages 4-12. In 2000, the league renamed its Bambino Division as Cal Ripken Baseball.
The team was welcomed home with cheers and support as they arrived at the Culiacán airport in Sinaloa, Mexico.
