Donovan Carrillo reached the figure skating final at the Winter Olympics 2026 in Milano, Italy.
The only figure skater representing Mexico reached 22nd on the final, earning a total score of 143.50 in the free skate and a total of 219.06.
Carrillo is from Guadalajara, Jalisco, but this time he chose a mix of Elvis Presley songs for his four-minute program, including “Jailhouse Rock” and “A Little Less Conversation.”
As he finalized his rock n roll-filled program, the crowd cheered as they watched the Mexican figure skater, who took it all in.
“Completely magical. Electrifying. The audience was spectacular right from the start,” Carillo told Olympics.com in Milano. “You could feel that affection, that vibe of support, that love. I feel very fortunate to be one of the skaters who I think receives so much love from the crowd.”
The 26-year-old stayed on his feet on both of the quadruple jumps he had planned to perform, but had a few errors. He turned out of his quadruple toeloop and received a negative grade of execution marks.
“I am very grateful to all the Mexicans who made that great effort to come to Milano," he said. "It's great to have people from your country in the audience. It literally felt like I was competing at home.
Carrillo also finished 22nd overall at the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022. Not bad for someone who had to practice his ice skating skills at a shopping mall ice rink.
He has also faced homophobic criticisms, given the macho culture still prevalent in Mexico, but he is determined to continue his figure skating career, receiving support from his family and fans.
