The L.A. County Board of Supervisors has approved the construction for the widening of the existing sidewalk along the two-mile-long perimeter of Calvary Cemetery in East Los Angeles which will accommodate a rubberized path, pedestrian lights and parkway trees.

The Board approved a letter from the Department of Public Works (DPW) to begin the construction bidding process for the project.

“Residents in East Los Angeles should be able to access public transportation easily, especially the Metro Gold Line, which serves as a connector to the east side of Los Angeles County,” said Chair Pro Tem Hilda Solis. “A decade in the making, this project is a testament to my commitment to ensuring our First District communities have access to public transportation to school and work along with improved nearby options for physical exercise.”

The Metro Gold Line Eastside Access Phase II Calvary Cemetery Pedestrian Path Project is part of the East Los Angeles improvement of access to the Metro Gold Line, also known as the E Line.

The project was first presented by AECom, Metro’s consultant, at three community events in 2013 and 2014, in addition to other engagement opportunities in 2017 and 2019 to ensure community input and support. This project will also support 65 direct and indirect jobs.

It includes $2.25 million in funding from the State Affordable Housing Sustainable Communities grant and $13.25 million from Chair Pro Tem Solis’ transportation discretionary funds.

Now approved, DPW will begin the bidding process, including the advertisement, award and execution of a construction contract. Construction is predicted to take place from Summer 2025 through Spring 2026.
