High temperatures are being felt across the Los Angeles region as the National Weather Service (NWS) issued an Extreme Heat Warning this week, which is set to be lifted on Friday at 8 p.m.
With elevated temperatures reaching highs beyond 100 degrees in some areas, LA Ready, the county’s emergency preparedness program, has opened cooling stations across the county for people who are trying to beat the heat.
An Extreme Heat Warning is issued when extremely dangerous heat conditions are occurring or upcoming, according to NWS.
“The main reason for it is a combination of daytime and nighttime temperatures as well as a couple of other things [that] present a high risk for heat illness for basically the entire population, not just folks who are typically vulnerable to that,” said Bryan Lewis, a meteorologist for NWS.
The Los Angeles County Health Department has also provided recommendations, including drinking plenty of water; planning your day to avoid the hottest hours; wearing light clothing; keeping your home cool; never leaving children or pets in a vehicle and checking on those at higher risk for heat-related illness.
“Compared to yesterday, [it's] a little bit cooler and that's mainly just because of that cloud coverage overhead. But because of that, it's also feeling a bit more humid for everyone, so that definitely plays into that impact in terms of heat illness,” Lewis said.
He added that Angelenos can expect to see high temperatures above normal on Thursday and especially again on Friday.
According to NWS, temperatures are anticipated to decrease starting Saturday and into early next week.
NWS is expected to lift the Extreme Heat Warning on Friday night.
