Back in my youth, I remember reading a teen magazine about riot grrls. I didn’t know what that was but it sounded cool. The article said something like “You want to be a riot grrl? Start a zine, play guitar or skate!”
What worked out for me was starting a zine, and it led me down the path of interviewing bands and choosing journalism as my career.
But making a zine could be just a fun thing to do on a Saturday, like the Soniditos Saturdays! workshops that Chicxs Rockerxs SELA (CRSELA) has organized for this fall.
The youth camp organization has Live Audio training for ages 15-25, hosted by Mayra. She will teach how to run audio for a stage.
"I love sharing my knowledge of audio with others, especially with youth,” Mayra said. “Equipment can look scary and overwhelming, but if you learn signal flow, it’s all doable. It’s the fun of connecting microphones, amps, mixers, cables, & speakers and making them all work."
The Zine Making workshop is for ages 13-18 and will be hosted by Miles, Nai, & Gutz. Each workshop will consist of five sessions, with four workshops and one show. Attendees will create their own zine and debut it at the show.
"Zines are so versatile! You can use them to explore your interests, raise awareness about issues you care about, or simply express yourself in new and creative ways. At the end of the 4 weeks, you'll walk away with your own physical zine to share with friends and family!" says a statement from Nai, Miles, & Gutz.
The series of workshops will take place on four Saturdays from noon to 1:30 p.m., starting on October 25. They are presented in partnership with Junk Rocker Thrift Shop.
The workshops will be hosted at Art Space HP, 3382 E Florence Ave, Huntington Park, CA 90255.
The last day to sign up is October 17. Sign up for free at crsela.org/soniditos
