In an effort to report on the current status of the Brown Berets, a historic Chicano organization founded in East L.A. in 1967, CALÓ News published a profile that has received feedback contradicting information that the newsroom has not been able to independently verify and therefore we have decided to pull the story.
The Brown Berets were founded in response to racism and discrimination against Chicanos in the Los Angeles school system where students were punished for speaking Spanish and discouraged from pursuing higher education.
Students who were seeing their peers being drafted and sent off to the Vietnam War at a young age, became involved in the East L.A. Walkouts of high schools in 1968.
While the Brown Berets are a historic organization, many are not aware that they still exist.
The national organization disbanded in 1972 following the Catalina Island takeover demanding that the land be turned into housing.
This is a developing story and we will update this story as more information can be independently verified.
