This Tuesday afternoon, Union del Barrio and the Community Self-Defense Coalition will host a press conference to invite the community to this year's May Day demonstration, which will take place on May 1 at Los Angeles City Hall.

Every year, the first day of May is set aside to commemorate International Workers’ Day. It is a time to celebrate the strength of workers across California, support local labor movements, recognize the hard work of immigrant workers and respect the dignity of all working-class people in the United States.

Union del Barrio is a coalition made up of more than 60 groups and independent organizations. It serves as a leading worker’s rights organization, with most of its leaders being volunteers who dedicate their own time to support the community.

“We invite the community to participate in this year's May Day demonstration. We are calling for people to not work, not go to school and not shop on May Day to send a clear message that we repudiate the fascist Trump administration and their ICE attacks against migrants and immigrants,” said Desiree Gaytan of Union del Barrio.

The Association of Raza Educators, working together with Union del Barrio, has led thousands of training sessions for teachers in different locations. These trainings focus on how to organize and use specific strategies when ICE is near schools. The goal is to help ensure students can safely get from home to school or the bus, and from the bus into the classroom without disruption, so that they can continue their learning.

“We must show our collective power and send a strong message that we want ICE out of our communities immediately,” said Cyntia Avitia, a leading member of the association.

John Parker from the Harriet Tubman Center for Social Justice and current candidate for the 37th District of the U.S. Congress stated, “On May Day, we want to reclaim our power as working class people and show this administration what real solidarity looks like.”
