The creative agency founded by Shepard Fairey, the artist behind the Barack Obama "Hope" and Kamala Harris "Forward" posters, has designed new campaign art highlighting 52nd Assembly District candidate Franky Carrillo.

The design team at Studio Number One created the poster, which was creatively directed by Shepard Fairey. They worked with Carrillo on the poster for his run to represent the office vacated by Wendy Carrillo in her run for L.A. City Council District 14.

Carrillo could become the first exoneree elected to the California State Assembly.

“Democracy takes engagement before, during, and after the election. My work to democratize art is intended to inspire people to learn about the candidates and take action on the issues that matter,” Fairey stated. “In this case, Franky Carrillo is a leader with a singular perspective on our justice system and marginalized communities, having served 20 years for a crime he didn't commit. He has the personal experience and dedication to shape lasting reform where we need it.”

Shepard Fairey formally endorsed Carrillo.

“When prolific, contemporary artist Shepard Fairey weighs in on an issue, it means something and carries real weight in our culture and consciousness,” Carrillo said. “His 2015 street-art campaign 'The Stamp of Incarceration' raised awareness about mass incarceration and the formerly incarcerated, who deserve a chance to rise above their past and make a difference for the future, for themselves and others in the community. I thank him for his support of my candidacy and for creating such a beautiful, moving image for my campaign.”

Carrillo served as a Commissioner on the L.A. County Probation Commission and is a Senior Policy Advisor for the L.A. Innocence Project at Cal State Los Angeles.

Carrillo’s story is featured in Netflix’s “The Innocence Files.”

Carrillo is running against Jessica Caloza who is also a Democrat. Caloza is an immigrant from the Philippines. She has worked in Los Angeles city government, the Obama administration and the state attorney general’s office.

Assembly District 52 is located within Los Angeles County and is made up of the neighborhoods of Atwater Village, Cypress Park, Eagle Rock, East Hollywood, East Los Angeles, Echo Park, El Sereno, Elysian Heights, Elysian Valley, Glassell Park, Glendale, Highland Park, Lincoln Heights, Los Feliz, Montecito Heights, Monterey Hills, Mt.
