According to data obtained by NBC News, 41% of people detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have no criminal conviction.
The Trump administration had previously stated they would go after criminals and worst offenders, but 1,800 arrested in the first weeks of February have no pending criminal charges from the 4,422 new detainees in total.
Tricia McLaughlin, spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security, said immigrants without a criminal record are often “far from innocent.”
In other White House news, the current administration has been using social media to spread their anti-immigrant propaganda using trendy catch phrases, memes and essentially trying to go viral, causing glee for their supporters and disgust from others. The Trump White House account on X, formerly Twitter, posted a video titled “ASMR: Illegal Alien Deportation Flight” showing people being shackled outside of a plane. The video also shows handcuffs with long chains.
The Lincoln Project retweeted the post with the caption “If Hitler had a social media account.”
Last week on Valentine’s Day, the official White House account posted on several social media platforms an image with the heads of President Donald Trump and his border czar Tom Homan and the words: “Roses are red violets are blue come here illegally and we’ll deport you.”
