El Tri's dream of moving past the round of 16 ended on Sunday night after losing at home at Estadio Azteca. The second host of this World Cup is out after Canada lost on Saturday to Morocco.
The match was a whirlwind of emotions. The two first excruciating almost back-to-back goals came from England's J. Bellingham at minutes 36 and 38. El Tri kept trying and the 12th man, aka the fans, never gave up cheering even at the most demoralizing moment for the players.
The astounding echo of, "Y si sí?" and "México, México" seemed to fuel the team. Quiñones scored at min. 42.
At minute 60, England scored for the third time via penalty and México at minute 69 scored, also by penalty.
However, it wasn't enough to make it a win, even when England played with 10 members after Jarell Quansah received a red card and 11 minutes of extra time were added at the end.
While this could have been coach Javier Aguirre’s perfect moment to redeem himself after the loss in the quarter-finals in 1986 when he was part of the selección nacional, it was not enough.
Goalkeeper Guillermo "Memo" Ochoa was seen crying at the end and the players left the field receiving the ovation from their fans.
This is a developing story.
