The federal government is requesting feedback from the public on its plans to build hundreds of miles of new border wall through Southern Arizona.
On Sept. 11, U.S. Customs and Border Protection quietly posted a document to its website requesting comments on plans to build secondary border walls in Arizona’s four border counties: Cochise, Pima, Santa Cruz, and Yuma. The secondary wall segments through areas including the Coronado National Memorial and Organ Pipe Cactus National monument. The barriers would also extend into city limits for both Nogales and Douglas.
The cluster of projects would amount to 225 miles of secondary border barrier.
The agency did not announce the public comment period on its social media channels or in its regular news releases. The 30-day comment period will end on Oct. 12. Spanish-language information on the comment period and process is available here.
Members of the public can submit comments to tucsoncomments@cbp.dhs.gov or by calling (833) 412-2056.
Secondary border barrier construction has been underway for months, with a double border wall visible in areas like Lochiel and Kino Springs. The second border wall is slated for most of the state’s southern border, according to CBP records.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, CBP opened another comment period for a 62-mile border wall project on the Tohono O’odham Nation. The tribe has vehemently opposed the project and is suing the Trump administration over the new border wall, though armed federal agents have entered the Nation to conduct pre-construction activities. CBP’s comment period for that particular project ends in one month, on Oct. 29.
