On Monday, agents from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) were denied entry into two Los Angeles Unified School District elementary schools.
The visitations happened at Lillian Elementary School and Russell Elementary School, both located in South Los Angeles.
A message was sent to the students' parents at both schools, stating that the agents "identified themselves as representatives of a federal agency" before administrators turned them away.
According to CBS News, LAUSD later confirmed the agents were from the federal goverment's Homeland Security Investigations division. As of now it is unclear why the federal agents visited the two schools.
CALÓ News has reached out to DHS but a statement has not yet been released. Earlier this year, to help students and families assert their constitutional rights, LAUSD schools began distributing "Know Your Rights" cards, commonly known as "red cards."
This initiative came after President Donald Trump’s announcement that his administration would allow Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers to conduct arrests in sensitive areas, such as schools and churches, reversing a 2011 policy that prohibited arrests from being made in those places.
