For the first time in the history of the event, Gloria Molina Grand Park is expanding their annual Día de los Muertos event into a full weekend, to include opening ceremonies, parade and festival. The park will also maintain community ofrendas, or altars, for fifteen days after the opening ceremonies, concluding with a film screening hosted by the GuadaLAjara Film Festival (GLAFF).

Gloria Molina Grand Park’s Downtown Día de los Muertos starts Saturday, October 10 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., community members are welcome to the park to enjoy live poetry recitals, music performances, Día de los Muertos-inspired workshops, face painting, delicious food trucks and bilingual art activities. The live music, crafts and concessions will continue on Sunday, October 12  from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., when families can also enjoy the Los Angeles Día de los Muertos Parade and Festival, produced by the Navarro Group.

For the two weeks following opening ceremonies, park-goers are encouraged to contribute their own offerings as well as framed photos of deceased loved ones to a larger community altar titled “Finding Peace Through Memories and Hope for the Future,” that will depict Angelenos’ commitment toward peace and goodwill.

Curated for the third time by local multimedia artist and educator Consuelo G. Flores, this year’s many community altars are designed as tributes to diverse communities throughout L.A. County, including multicultural ancestors, LGBTQ+ members, beloved pets, children, Mexican literacy artists and those who have fought for social justice and equity.

The celebrations close out with a free outdoor film screening of “Monstruo de Xibalba” on Saturday, November 2, from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Presented by GLAFF in collaboration with the park, community members are invited to experience “Monstruo de Xibalba,” the film is a story that honors loved ones and celebrates the rich cultural heritage of Mexico.

Only the film screening requires tickets, available for free at https://glaff.org/program-2/.

No registration required for ceremonies and ofrendas. Find the full schedule and details of each event at https://grandparkla.org/diadelosmuertos
