Los Angeles County Board Chair and First District Supervisor Hilda L. Solis joined Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk Dean C. Logan on Tuesday to hold an Election Day media briefing at the Los Angeles County Ballot Processing Center.
The briefing covered updates on Election Day operations, voter participation, election security coordination, ballot processing and the secure transportation and handling of ballots.
Logan said that just before 2 p.m. on Tuesday the county had surpassed 100,000 in-person voters and was approaching 1 million vote-by-mail ballots.
“June primaries have notoriously lower turnout compared to other statewide elections and compared to our general elections,” Logan said. “But this one is trending above that norm based on what we are seeing at the vote center today.”
Logan reported that the county anticipates seeing around a 30% turnout, compared to 28% turnout about four years ago.
Solis added that thousands of volunteers across the county, including some county workers, people from the public and high school students, have volunteered to keep things running smoothly.
“Many do it out of their heart, of all walks of life, young and old and speaking different languages,” Solis said. “I think they are the ones uplifting what is happening here.”
There are 424 ballot boxes and 646 vote centers countywide that will be open until 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
Vote centers are also open to accommodate multiple languages and accessibility features.
Security, according to Logan, is being coordinated as an all-hands approach, involving multiple agencies across the county, including county communications, the office of emergency services and the county sheriff's office, which will also facilitate the transportation of ballots from vote centers to ballot processing centers by helicopter and patrol cars.
