Earlier this month, Homeboy Industries, the largest gang rehabilitation and reentry program in the country, purchased the Monastery of the Angels in the Hollywood Hills. The organization plans to turn it into Home of the Angels, a new recovery campus that will offer housing, outpatient treatment and peer-supported respite care to help people suffering from substance abuse to heal and rebuild their lives.
Founded in 1988 by Father Greg Boyle, Homeboy Industries has supported thousands of people each year through its nationally recognized model, which provides wraparound services, job training and social enterprise opportunities.

In 2018, Homeboy Industries served 7,000 members of Los Angeles community members and their flagship 18-month employment and re-entry program was offered to over 400 men and women. The five key outcomes they strive for as an organization are: reducing recidivism, reducing substance abuse, improving social connectedness, improving housing safety and stability and reunifying families.
“Healing happens when people are received with tenderness and held in community,” said Boyle. “Home of the Angels reflects what we have always believed at Homeboy Industries: that people heal when they are seen, cherished and given a place to belong. By creating spaces rooted in love and dignity, we make room for restoration, hope and new beginnings.”
Owned by the Dominican Order since 1934, the monastery has long been a place of prayer and service. In recent years, the Order began looking for a partner who would preserve the property’s purpose and carry forward a mission rooted in the same values.
The four-acre property will gradually be updated to support individuals already participating in Homeboy Industries programs. The organization also plans to preserve the site’s exterior and overall spirit, honoring the nuns’ legacy through mission-driven programming and long-term care of the property.

“This moment is about tending to the urgent need for home, providing relief, safety and hope to those already seeking care,” stated Shirley Torres and Steve Delgado, Co-CEOs of Homeboy Industries. “We are doubling down on dignity, healing, and our mission at a time when so many people are presenting with deeper trauma and despair. Home of the Angels reflects our commitment to a continuum of care where people heal, belong and return to community.”
Home of the Angels campus will be operated in partnership with Los Angeles Centers for Alcohol and Drug Abuse (L.A. CADA), a longtime collaborator and one of L.A. County’s largest substance use disorder treatment providers.
Additionally, the campus will operate with 24-hour staffing seven days a week with structured programming. Most services will be licensed and regulated by the State of California. Admissions will be managed through scheduled referrals and assessments, rather than allowing walk-ins.
Once the campus is fully developed, Home of the Angels is expected to offer 50 inpatient beds for substance use disorder treatment, 10 peer respite beds, 40 outpatient treatment spots and residential bridge housing to ensure continuous care.

"For generations, this monastery has been a place of prayer, quiet service and sanctuary,” said Sister Joseph Marie of the Child Jesus, O.P., Prioress of the Dominican Sisters of the Monastery of the Angels. “As our community discerned the future of this sacred site, we felt a deep responsibility to entrust it to a steward whose mission reflected our own values. Homeboy Industries has demonstrated a profound commitment to dignity, compassion and healing for those most in need. In Homeboy, we recognize an ally who honors the spirit of this place and will carry its legacy forward as a refuge of care, restoration and hope.”
