68th SoCal Journalism Awards - Betsy Annas
The SoCal Journalism Awards, held on June 28, celebrated the best journalism in the region. CALÓ News was also recognized for its work in immigration reporting, sports commentary and the best use of social media.
Natalia Molina’s piece on CALÓ News, "The Dodgers: They just like us," received first place in the Sports Commentary category.
CALÓ News reporters Amairani Hernandez, Brenda Verano and Jacqueline Garcia received third place in the SoCal Journalism Awards in the Immigration Reporting, Sociopolitical category for their story "LA's immigration defense organizers are burning out. Here's how they keep going." This story was part of the series “L.A. vs. ICE,” a collaboration with Los Angeles Public Press, L.A. Taco, Capital & Main, Capital B and Q Voice News.
Susana Canales Barrón, who collaborates with CALÓ News as a California Local News Fellow, won second place for her story "Infant left momentarily parentless after immigration raid near a WIC store in Oxnard" in the Best Use Of Social Media To Enhance And/Or Cover A Story By An Independent Journalist category. Canales Barrón recently won a Ruben Salazar Journalism Award for her work at Los Angeles Public Press.
The SoCal Journalism Awards are organized by the Los Angeles Press Club.
