Colombian singer Karol G featured iconic telenovela villains in a teaser video for her new album “Tropicoqueta.”
In the video, Karol G admires a photo of Ricky Martin when he had luscious long hair and was a heartthrob for teens all over Latin America in the 1990s.
Anahí plays Karol G’s rival for Ricky’s love in the video, where they then wrestle in a luxurious home.
They are stopped by Itatí Cantoral, who plays Anahí’s mother in the video. Cantoral has enjoyed online viral success due to memes from her performance as Soraya Montenegro in the Mexican telenovela “Maria la del Barrio.” Her face has also become the image of “crying in Spanish,” an expression widely used on social media.
Ninel Conde then enters the video, followed by a scene outside the mansion with Gaby Spanic and Azela Robinson, who recreated a scene from “La Usurpadora.”
Cynthia Klitbo, another actress who has played telenovela villains, was not featured in the video but said she would have loved to be a part of it, however she wasn’t on Karol G’s level.
Karol G’s new album will be released on June 20. Her first single from “Tropicoqueta,” called “Latina Foreva,” was the source of controversy on social media, as some fans and critics objected to the hypersexualization of Latinas in the lyrics as a dangerous stereotype.
“This album sounds like a little piece of all of us,” Karol G posted on Instagram. “It started as a wish in August 2023, since then I have been leaving you some clues along the way and I can say that when I finished it, I did it with a heart full of the love I received in every country I visited... This album is soul, it is passion, it is memory, it is nostalgia, it is joy, it is party, it is identity. As a great friend said, ‘It is a Love letter to what we were and a manifesto of what we are now.’ It is my best way of saying: I am from here AND I FEEL INFINITELY PROUD !!!”
