When I began as editor of CALÓ News at the beginning of the year, we had a team of two staff writers and two UC Berkeley fellows. In the months that have followed, we’ve slowly grown the news site with thoughtful stories that reflect the Latino community in Los Angeles and surrounding areas. We have also expanded our reporting to Southeast L.A. and we have concentrated our work for the upcoming election.
Brenda Verano is our staff reporter who reports on policies in Los Angeles while Amairani Hernandez has expanded our healthcare stories and has her motherhood and health column "Mami and me." I must add that our freelance writers have contributed stories that feature the culture and richness of our community. Michelle Zacarías has worked on in-depth stories and Gladys Vargas has worked on our multimedia projects. Abelardo de la Peña Jr. has worked as our wise copy editor and is happy to report on all the arts and culture happenings in the city.
We have also created the podcast “Presente,” hosted by Francisco Aviles Pino.
Aviles Pino is now working with the Latino Media Collaborative, our nonprofit parent organization, to coordinate our work with grants and projects.
We have now added a collaboration with LA Blade, whose editor Gisselle Palomera is working with CALÓ News and reporting on LGBTQ+ issues that connect with the Latine community.
In partnership with Latino Times and the Latino Media Collaborative, we are also expanding our reporting on state policy and issues with their UC Berkeley fellow Constanza Eliana Chinea.
Last but not least, we have a cartoonist in the house! And it’s the amazing Lalo Alcaraz. We couldn’t be happier to have him as part of the team.
All of this would not be possible without our fearless leader, Martin Albornoz, whose official title is the general manager, but he is also our publisher, events organizer and a multipurpose multitasker.
As we near the end of the year, I’m excited to share that we are on track to keep growing and writing stories that inform, entertain and serve Latinos in Los Angeles and our surrounding communities.
