Mario Aguilar is currently on his comedy tour “Ojo De Loca No Se Equivoca,” passing through Downey this past weekend to grace the city with a show that includes a dance routine with back-up dancers, chanclazos, industrial-sized fog machines, a tarot reading and a surprise new character: himself.
“It’s the first time I come out on stage as Mario Aguilar,” said Aguilar to CALÓ News in Spanish. “At the end of the day, I am all these different characters, but it’s the first time I am truly myself on stage.”
The skit where Aguilar posed as himself was about his journey into adulthood from leaving his mother’s house, to realizing he was becoming her in the most mundane ways, like stressing out about leaving the stove and lights on before going to bed.
Aguilar gained popularity on social media channels in Spanish, for mocking his mother Gloria Aguilar, in the most universally-understood ways for everyone raised by a Latin American mom. With a peluca desgreñada and a delantal azul, Aguilar has locked into iconic status for his comedy skits mocking his mother. She is 75 years old and Aguilar says she continues to be one of his strongest supporters since his first video went viral on social media in 2014.

“My mom is always very happy and she is my number one fan,” said Aguilar. “She’s always supported me and gives me ideas for more videos.”
Aguilar’s mother even tells him she’s going to scold him more often so he has more content for his videos.
His skits will always include his mother, but also include other characters that make up a fictitious and dysfunctionally-functional, family dynamic similar to that of La Familia P.Luche.
The 28-year old comedian began to incorporate other characters into his comedy sketches on social media channels and has now brought them on stage. The typical Latin American family consists of an overworked and under-valued mother married to a hardworking, but despistado father, and twin siblings “La Morena,” and “Mario.” La Morena is a character that Aguilar describes as a ‘toxica.’ As La Morena, she performs comedy skits about going out to perrear, and all the toxic things she and her friends do when they go out drinking. Mario’s character is more reminiscent of a younger self.
“Mario is a part [of the show] that will make audience members identify with a more innocent part of their childhood,” said Aguilar. “It’s the most nostalgic part of the whole show that will take you back to your childhood memories and memories that you may not think about now as an adult because you’re caught up thinking about work and other stressors. All my other characters are made-up, but Mario authentically comes from the heart and soul and the nostalgia of being a child.”
The show started off with an introduction from Downey Mayor Mario Trujillo and his husband. The night then filled with boisterous laughter that only got louder and rowdier as the skits went on and the drinks flowed through the audience.

The Downey Pride events this weekend happened after earlier this year in May, Mayor Trujillo opposed the city council adopting a “neutral” flag policy, effectively banning the Pride flag on any government property.
Aguilar’s sold-out show brought in celebrity audience members like Grammy-nominated artist Lupita Infante and other social media influencers like power couple ‘Una Pareja Dispareja,’ Miguel Calvillo and fiancé Jonas Yomero.
Aguilar is a rising star in the Spanish comedy and social media world. He is not only currently on tour around the United States and Latin America, but is now also working on other exciting projects and collaborations.
“I’m very excited because there are a lot of exciting new projects in the works like a collaboration with the tequila brand Sauza,” said Aguilar. He is also now a musician on Spotify with his latest single released during Pride month titled, “MARIO.”
You can follow Mario Aguilar on social media if you’re looking for someone to validate all of the funny family trauma you experienced growing up. Aguilar’s next SoCal appearance will be on November 8 in Riverside and tickets for this ant other upcoming shows can be found on his website.
