Few things are scarier than a human-hunting alien Predator, but language extinction is one of them. To tie-in the Halloween season with the Getty Scholars Program annual theme of extinction, the Getty Center is hosting a screening of the 2022 film “PREY,” the first feature film to be entirely dubbed in Comanche, on Friday, October 25.
“PREY,” directed by Dan Trachtenberg, follows Naru, a young woman tasked with protecting her people from colonizing French fur traders as well as from the human-hunting alien Predator. For this prequel in the Predator franchise, producer Jhane Myers (Comanche/Blackfoot) worked closely with the production team to ensure the casting, plot and language were deeply informed by Indigenous storytellers.
After the screening, Myers, along with Comanche scholar Dr. Eric Tippeconnic and artist Virgil Ortiz (Cochiti Pueblo) will discuss science fiction, Indigenous storytelling and the use of art to preserve endangered languages and cultures.
The Getty Scholars Program's 2024–2025 annual theme of extinction focuses on research topics exploring that which is lost, but also the urgent impulse toward preservation and permanence.
Of course, popcorn and spooky treats will be provided. Advance tickets are available now. Registration is required.
