Robert Vargas.
Muralist Robert Vargas has started a new project for Project Angel Food, honoring the nonprofit’s mission of food, love, and community.
The City of Los Angeles has honored Vargas twice, proclaiming September 8, 2021 as “Robert Vargas Day” and naming Robert Vargas Square at First & State Streets in 2022 in recognition of his artistic and civic contributions.
His paintings and drawings infuse classic genres of portraiture and he is known for his mixed-media portraits, murals and live events. Vargas has painted murals around the globe, from his native Boyle Heights neighborhood to Paris.
His work-in-progress “Angelus,” in downtown L.A.’s Pershing Square, is being painted on the side of a 14-story apartment building and is set to break the Guinness World Record for the largest mural completed by a single artist.
Vargas was introduced to Project Angel Food by Edward James Olmos.
The mural is scheduled to be completed within two weeks on the south façade of Project Angel
Food’s Vine Street headquarters. It will depict the organization’s diverse staff and volunteers, as well as core values of the organization.
Vargas will be painting daily from August 14, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at 922 Vine Street, Los Angeles, CA 90038.
