The CALÓ News Diálogo on Thursday will focus on prevention and early cancer detection.
The Dialogo Series is a regular convening space launched by the Latino Media Collaborative and CALÓ News for open discussion, conversation and dialogue.
The fifth Díalogo, named “A tu Salud!” will feature keynote speakers highlighting how cancer is the leading cause of death for U.S. Latinos, Latinas and the Latinx community.
In some cases, Latinos have a higher likelihood of dying from certain kinds of cancer than the general population. They are less likely to be diagnosed with the most common cancers like lung, colorectal, breast, and prostate. They are also more likely to develop cancer in the liver, stomach, and cervix.
The main topic of the discussion will be how we look at some of the structural issues that keep Latinos from early detection, how we educate our community to get checked out sooner and more often, how we educate our community to advocate for themselves, especially when there might be a history of cancer and how do we as a community become more open to discussing diseases so that we can improve our survival rates.
John G. Raffoul, president of Adventist Health White Memorial will be a speaker at the Díalogo. Michelle Zacarias, who is a reporter/fellow at CALÓ News will talk about her personal experience with cancer and her column on her treatment. Other panelists include Hector Flores, MD, who is chairman of Adventist Health White Memorial Department of Family Medicine, Dr. Faustina Nevarez, medical director at Women's Health at AltaMed Health Services, Eva A. Meyers Ph.D., a professional oncology nurse practitioner at Adventist Health White Memorial Cecilia Gonzalez De La Hoya Cancer Center and Diana Estrada-Stolpe, regional pharmacyclinical services manager at MFS Pharmacy Clinical Services Manager.
“A Tu Salud! Prevention and early detection: breaking stigmas and embracing wellness across generations” will take place October 17, from 5 pm to 8:00 pm at White Memorial Hospital, 1720 E Cesar E Chavez Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90033. You can RSVP here.
