The sixty-seventh annual Southern California Journalism Awards took place on Sunday, June 22, and CALÓ News won two awards for Race and Society reporting and Editorial Cartoon. 

CALÓ News reporter and California Local News Fellow Michelle Zacarías won the Race and Society Reporting, Online award for her work “Black and Latino survivors of burned Palm Springs community seek restitution.” 

CALÓ News staff editorial cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz won the Editorial Cartoon for “Virgen de Guadalupe and Angel Deportation.” 

The newsroom won second place for voter guides in the Blog Group, Online category in collaboration with California State University of Los Angeles’ UT Community News and Boyle Heights Beat 

CALÓ News also won second place for “LA’s Latinx Landmarks” in the Best Use of Social Media by a Group category in collaboration with California State University of Los Angeles social media team, CSULA community news and Los Angeles Times’ De Los.

CALÓ News was a finalist in eight different categories.

The Los Angeles Press Club, founded in 1900, organizes the awards to honor journalists in Southern California.

Alcaraz’s "Lalo on CALÓ" is a collection of cartoons that brings crucial insights and awareness to the issues that shape our lives in today's world. 

Michelle Zacarias was nominated in four categories, including the investigative reporting category for “Who are the Victorville 8 and why are they being charged with conspiracy?”. She was also nominated for her commentary piece “Latinos are not a monolith: a nuanced picture beyond the polls,” as well as in the Columnist category for her deeply personal column “Sin Pena,” which reflects on her experience navigating cancer twice—first as a child and most recently as an adult.
