CALÓ News is a finalist in eight different categories at this year’s Los Angeles Press Club's SoCal Journalism Awards, standing out among more than 2,500 entries.

Award-winning Chicano visual artist and writer Lalo Alcaraz has been working with our newsroom since last year. He is nominated for his editorial cartoon “Virgen de Guadalupe and Angel Deportation.”

His "Lalo on CALÓ" is a powerful collection of cartoons that brings crucial insights and awareness to the issues that shape our lives in today's world. From politics and religion to pop culture, social justice and education, Lalo’s cartoons are bold, unfiltered and unafraid to push boundaries—just like the artist himself.

CALÓ News reporter and California News Fellow Michelle Zacarias has been named a finalist in multiple categories. Her work is recognized in race and society reporting for “Black and Latino survivors of burned Palm Springs community seek restitution” and in the investigative reporting category for “Who are the Victorville 8 and why are they being charged with conspiracy?”. She is also nominated for her commentary piece “Latinos are not a monolith: a nuanced picture beyond the polls” as well as for her deeply personal column “Sin Pena,” which reflects on her experience navigating cancer twice—first as a child and most recently as an adult.

The newsroom has also been nominated for sports commentary by Natalia Molina, “Will my brother be at the World Series? I think so,” as well as a blog group for best use of social media to enhance and cover a story, in collaboration with California State University of Los Angeles students, UT Community News Staff, the Boyle Heights Beat and the LA Times’ De Los.

The SoCal Journalism Awards Gala will be taking place on Sunday, June 22, at the Millennium Biltmore hotel in downtown Los Angeles, where the winners will be announced.
