Lalo on CALÓ: Damn street vendor!
Karen Bass walked into the debate needing to remind Angelenos that she understands Los Angeles—and somehow managed to insult one of the things we love most about it: our street vendors. By declaring that food vendors don’t belong in front of restaurants and then comparing their presence to homeless encampments, Bass turned hardworking taqueros and sidewalk entrepreneurs into a “problem” to be removed. Maybe there was a little too much projection going on: when voters are frustrated with City Hall, blaming the taco stand for getting in everybody’s way is a strange choice—especially when you’re the mayor standing in the way of your own reelection.
