Cheech & Chong

Cheech Marin & Tommy Chong in younger years.

Will this really be “Cheech & Chong’s Last Movie”? Maybe.

In one of the commercials circulating in social media, Tommy Chong acknowledges it may not be their last movie… unless they die. “Oh,” Cheech Marin responds just before the commercial ends.

In the film’s trailer, the emblem of the car they are in is, of course, a marijuana plant as the sound of their stand-up is in the background. “How many people here smoke grass?” Chong is heard saying in the background as the screen cuts to an audience with 1970s looks and hairstyles.

“Is this a documentary or a movie?” Cheech asks. “I don’t know…” Chong responds. We don’t know either. But it’s clear from the desert road they are driving that it will be a trip.

“Am I driving okay?” Chong asks. The only problem is, he’s not in the driver’s seat. But he has certainly been in the driver’s seat directing four of their films and co-writing them together.

Cheech and Chong have been working as a comedy duo since the 1970s, creating stand-up routines and movies where no subject is taboo. Drugs, sex, rock n’ roll and shenanigans ensue in all their acts.

They met in Vancouver in 1969 and it has been a wild ride ever since. Their first movie was “Up in Smoke” in 1978, which has become a cult classic. Their most recent before their “last movie” was the animated “Cheech & Chong’s Animated Movie!” released in 2013.

“Cheech & Chong’s Last Movie” is out now in theaters.
