THE LOWDOWN: The I-405 Sepulveda Pass—L.A.’s legendary (and often frustrating) freeway—is getting a $143.7 million makeover. That means smoother roads, better safety, and fewer potholes in the long run. But first? A series of weekend closures that will test the patience of even the most seasoned Angeleno driver.

Mark your calendars: The first major closure kicks off Friday, August 22 at 10 p.m. through Monday, August 25 at 5 a.m. Expect only three lanes open in each direction and multiple ramp closures—yes, including Wilshire, Sunset, and Santa Monica Boulevard.

WHY THIS MATTERS: This isn’t just another construction project. The I-405 Pavement Rehabilitation Project is a full-scale repaving and safety upgrade from Van Nuys to Westwood. Think of it as major surgery for a freeway that’s been overworked for decades. The goal? Fewer delays, safer drives, and a road that lasts.

What’s being fixed?

YOUR GAME PLAN: HOW TO AVOID THE CHAOS Closures in a nutshell:

• Northbound I-405: Santa Monica Blvd on-ramp, Wilshire Blvd off-ramp, Sunset Blvd on/off-ramps, and Sepulveda/Moraga off-ramp CLOSED.

• Southbound I-405: Sunset/Church Lane on/off-ramps and westbound Wilshire on-ramp CLOSED.

Detour like a pro:

• Heading north? Take Santa Monica Blvd east → Sepulveda Blvd north → Moraga Drive on-ramp.

• Heading south? Church Lane north → Sepulveda Blvd south → Santa Monica Blvd west → southbound I-405 on-ramp.

Pro moves:
