Cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz presents ‘Artbolish ICE’ during Pomona Art Walk

People throughout the country have expressed their frustration and anger at the terror that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency has pushed upon immigrant communities since the inception of the current administration, as they continue tearing families apart at a rapid pace, leaving whole communities broken. 

Local activists have expressed their thoughts on ICE in different ways, with some like CALÓ News cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz, who's been motivated to host his own exhibit called “ARTbolish ICE,” to create spaces where artists can express these thoughts through a paintbrush and canvas. 

The “ARTbolish ICE” exhibit, curated by Alcaraz, takes place on August 8 at the Galeria Yasmin, located on 2nd Street in Downtown Pomona during the Pomona Art Walk and will be free to the public.

In an interview with CALÓ News, Alcaraz said that the exhibit will bring together a number of professional artists.  

“The Artbolish ICE art exhibit is a large group show with many LA and out of town artists,” Alcaraz said. “There will be paintings, drawings, prints, lots of stuff from artists that I've come across so that are my friends or that I know from all over the U.S., including some political cartoonists.”

Alcaraz stated that the motivation behind the art exhibit is the shared antipathy toward ICE, and the idea that artists should be able to express that. 

“Artists should express themselves to abolish ICE and the community outrage against these terrorists that are attacking our communities. It is widespread. The whole country hates ICE, and I think I want to show that artists are opposed to ICE,” Alcaraz said. “We have different ways of expressing that, so this is just one venue for people to [express] themselves and their feelings about these masked thugs that are attacking, killing our people and separating families.”

Some notable artists presenting at the exhibit include Ramon Ramirez, Salomon Huerta,  Pinchy Miche and Antonio Pelayo and his son Isaac Pelayo and many others.

The “Artbolish ICE” art exhibit will be hosted by Yasmin CR and Jaime Gutierrez, owners of Galeria Yasmin, and curator Lalo Alcaraz. Galleria Yasmin is located at 250 W 2nd St, Pomona, CA 91766
